Another installment of “The Invisible Ones” of Washington, DC
Letrice has been living on the streets of Washington, DC for nine years. She came to DC following being displaced from her home by Hurricaine Katrina in 2005. She had spent a year living in various shelters in New Orleans before heading to DC. Since being here she has lived in various shelters but mostly outdoors where she feels safer. Letrice has connections with Social Services in DC and is hopeful that after being on the waiting list for nine years she may actually be placed in housing. If this were to happen it would have an enormous impact on Letrice’s life. It would allow her to seek employment with a permanent address, it would provide a safe and secure place to live and give her self esteem a much needed boost. Letrice is an affable and friendly woman who inspite of her circumstances is surprisingly upbeat and optimistic about her future. She was enthusiastic about participating in the Invisible Ones photo project, seeing it as a way to help others like herself by raising awareness. If you know someone like Letrice that you may pass by on your way to work, stop and have a conversation. Ask if you can help out in some way. I guarantee you’ll both be better off for having had that experience.
