Michael is a homeless, mentally ill man living on the streets of Washington, DC. This is the second Winter I have encountered Michael on the street. You hear him before you see him as he’s usually singing or yelling at nothing in particular beyond his own auditory hallucinations. He will focus his attention long enough to engage you in a conversation just to let you know that, “life is good and he’s got things to do.” Michael will not talk about his life past or present, and talking about his psychiatric condition is off limits entirely. He gladly accepts the food voucher I give him in exchange for his photograph and goes on his way, stopping traffic on a busy DC street.
